SEND support in the EYFS: Supporting Every Child from the Start
In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we believe every child deserves the best possible start to their learning journey. We are committed to identifying and supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) as early as possible, so they can grow in confidence, develop key skills and enjoy coming to school.
Our EYFS staff take time to really get to know each child. We carefully observe children as they play and learn, helping us to spot strengths as well as any areas where extra support may be needed. We work closely with parents and carers from the very beginning, sharing information and listening to your views so that we can support your child together.
We use the Tapestry Online Learning Journal to record your child’s learning and development. This allows parents and carers to see what their child has been learning in school and to share achievements and experiences from home. This strong home–school partnership helps us to build a fuller picture of each child and ensures learning is joined up and meaningful.
Our EYFS environment is inclusive and nurturing, with teaching and support adapted to meet individual needs. This may include personalised strategies, small group support or targeted interventions, particularly for children who need extra help with communication, social skills or emotional regulation. Where appropriate, we also work alongside external professionals to ensure children receive the right support at the right time.
We place great importance on smooth transitions into EYFS and as children move on within the school. By working closely with families and sharing information early, we help children feel safe, settled and ready to learn.
Our aim is for every child to feel supported, included and valued, with their needs identified early, and their learning celebrated every step of the way.
